I now cycle to work come hell or high water

BetterPoints user Geoffrey tells us his story

Teacher and keen cyclist Geoffrey was stuck in a rut with his car commute. That was until his family moved to Warwick and discovered Choose How You Move. With the help of the BetterPoints app and by giving his car away, he’s now cycling the 7-mile journey to and from work via his son’s nursery every weekday. Here is what he had to say:

Before joining the Choose How You Move Warwick challenge, what were your travel habits like?

“I have been into cycling for a long time. However, I slipped into the habit of using the car all the time and not cycling at all. I was driving 300 miles a week to get to work.

However, when we moved to the local area and I came across the app, I started to pick up cycling again and mix car and bicycle commutes.”

How has using the BetterPoints app helped? What is it you like about it?

“It is definitely motivating to get the points rewards.

It has also been great finding out about local businesses through the app, all of which I’ve been able to get to by bike or bus. I have been down to Smithery recently, where I traded in a voucher to purchase some items.

I also like checking my journeys from time to time to see the miles I have been racking up. It is encouraging to see how much travel can be done without a car.”

How has the BetterPoints app changed your activity and travel habits?

“Since joining Choose How You Move, I have gone a step further and now commute by bike every day come hell or high water. On the rare occasion where my bike is off the road, I will take the bus instead.

My wife and I had two cars when we moved here, but as one of them was getting so little use we gave it away to my brother. If not for the fact my wife needs a car for work, the other one might have gone too!

We’ve ended up buying a bike trailer to ferry our one year old boy about rather than using the car. I hitch it to my bike and pick him up from nursery every weekday.

During the school holidays I have been on childcare duties, so I have been taking him in the trailer whilst out doing jobs in town or for leisure activities. We will do 20 miles a day sometimes.”

What benefits have you noticed as a result?

“It is the whole suite. I feel a lot more energised when I arrive at school in the morning after a cycle.

The environmental impact is there to see in the app with the CO2 emissions saved.

And financially too, not having the second car and driving less in general is saving us a considerable amount of money, especially at the moment with fuel costs.”

A big thank you to Geoffrey for sharing his story with the BetterPoints community. He has been chosen as our latest ‘Ditch the Car Star’ winner.
